Try and Trust Horatio Alger 9781444428315 Books

"Try and Trust" set in rural and small town Ohio, is fast paced and uplifting. Horatio Alger wrote entertaining, feel good, rags to riches, and overcoming adversity, stories about plucky orphans or other young American males disadvantaged in some way or another. Their strength of character, courage and basic decency are always the cause of their eventual and inevitable success. A good way to get the flavor of post Civil War America. Well worth the price, $.99 when I bought it.

Try and Trust Horatio Alger 9781444428315 Books Reviews

Well done within the genre of late 19th century writing for a childrens' audience. I am an adult, but find it calming and enjoyable. The writing is simple, the plot contrived, but smoothly told with the noble intent of conveying character values, especially to underprivileged youth; I read a lot of Horatio Alger while on my bicycling machine.
By modern standards the plots are simjplistic, unbelieveable and tjhe language is stilted. But Alger gives us a peek at the spirit of the times.
I've probably read at least a dozen Horatio Alger stories so far and this is the best of them all.

Alger's analysis of human nature as well as the disparity between the economic classes really shines forth in this book. His dialogue is magnificent and his descriptions of life back in the 1900s is, as usual, excellent.

Many say that Alger's books are formulaic and, while there may be some truth to this comment, the fact of that matter is that every one of his books is a comfort and pleasure for me to read and I never feel myself nodding and saying "oh no, more of the same."

This is a great book. Read it.
All the stories are the same. The religious tones are not hidden in this book. These are good books for young people to read.
learn about life around the turn of the last century
Thoroughly enjoyed the book. Brought back memories of my childhood, reading Horatio Alger, Jr., books.
Horatio Alger is a long time famous writer who has exceptional skills in expressing an excellent story. I enjoyed this book tremendously.
